The Opera Studio:
A new Australian Work in Progress
As part of The State Opera's policy of fostering the development of opera as an art form into the 21st century, we will present a public workshop of a new Work in Progress called 'Ingkata'.
Ingkata is a bi-cultural opera based on the life of brilliant South Australian anthropologist Ted Strehlow and his fascinating and controversial relationship with the Aranda people of Central Australia.
The Strehlow story is one of the great 'untold' Australian dramas, and still hugely potent and divisive. It centres around Strehlow's quixotic and heroic quest to save the priceless cultural heritage of the Aranda Aborigines from obliteration.
But what happens when your culture is defined as 'dead' - and yet that culture continues to adapt, transform and evolve?
Ingkata is a passionate cultural encounter between Western contemporary opera, popular Aboriginal music (‘blackfella’ hip-hop, blues, rock), and traditional Aranda song and Lutheran chorale – a heady mix.
Delegates from the Australian Performing Arts Market, industry representatives and key funding agencies from around Australia will be invited to attend the workshops with the expectation of attracting sufficient interest and additional funding to present a fully staged production of Ingkata in the future. Dont miss this exciting preview.
Presented by Racing Pulse Productions in association with State Opera of South Australia.
